The Screaming Eagles varsity baseball team hosted the Reidsville Rams tonight in the opening round of the 2015 Ashley Spring Break Tournament. Price King? got the nod on the hill tonight, and pitched effectively for 5+ innings to earn the win, by a final score of 5-0. He scattered 4 hits, picking up 7 Ks along the way. After running into a touch of trouble in the 6th, with runners on first and second with one out, Christian Tafoya? relieved King, and secured two big outs without a run scoring. Drake Overton then finished the game in the 7th inning, picking up 2 strikeouts himself.
Ashley struck first in the bottom of the 4th inning, as Donovan Francis? opened the frame with a walk. He was then awarded second base on an obstruction call, as he ran into the second baseman during a botched rundown. Sean Ross then walked, followed by Kason Valentine with a single to center to score Francis. Jordan Fentress? then place a bunt single down the 3rd base line to load the bases. Tafoya then reached on a fielder's choice scoring another run. Lee Fentress? then had an RBI groundout to short, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 6th, Ashley added two insurance runs, as D.C. Russ and Evan Laverick? both reached on errors. Following a Jordan Fentress hit by pitch, Kyle Stewart? then fought off a 2-strike curve ball for a 2 RBI single up the middle.
Ashley's record is now 7-3, and we play Reagan High School tomorrow night at 7:30with a berth to the championship game on the line.
In other games, New Hanover defeated Southern Lee 6-4, Reagan outlasted Hoggard 6-3, and Mooresville hung on the beat Laney 7-6.
